Evangelion Bearbricks apply the colour schemes of the Evangelion units — the giant biomechanical machines from Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion — to the BE@RBRICK form. Medicom has produced Unit 01, Unit 02, Unit 08 and Unit 13, plus a chrome First Machine edition.
This covers which units exist as figures, what “new paint version” means, and which to buy.
What is Evangelion?
A Japanese animated series first broadcast in 1995, followed by a long sequence of films. It is among the most influential works in modern anime, and its mecha designs — the Evangelion units — are instantly recognisable to anyone who follows the medium.
Each unit has a distinct colour identity: Unit 01 purple and green, Unit 02 red, Unit 08 pink. That is what makes the series suit the Bearbrick format so well — the designs are already reducible to bold colour blocking.
Which Evangelion units are available as Bearbricks?
Four units plus a chrome variant, across both sizes.
- Evangelion First Machine CHROME 1000% — $528, the chrome-finish flagship
- Unit 01 (new paint version) 1000% — $464, with the 100% & 400% set at $104
- Unit 13 (new paint version) 1000% — $464, with the 100% & 400% set at $104
- Unit 8 β 1000% — $414.40, with a 400% gross version at $94.40
- Unit 2 1000% — $64, the most accessible 1000% in the whole range
What does “new paint version” mean?
Medicom has released some units more than once with revised colour application. The “new paint version” is the later, updated treatment rather than a different unit.
This matters if you are matching figures on a shelf: an original and a new paint version of the same unit will not be identical in tone. Check which version a listing specifies before buying a second figure to sit alongside one you already own.
What is the β in Unit 8 β?
Beta — a variant designation from the later Rebuild of Evangelion films, where Unit 08 appears in successively modified forms. The “gross version” 400% is a further variant of that design.
These naming conventions come straight from the source material rather than from Medicom, which is why they can look opaque if you have not watched the films.
Which Evangelion Bearbrick should you buy?
The Unit 2 1000% at $64 is unusual value — a 70cm figure at a price most 400% sets exceed. If you want the size and the series appeals, that is the obvious starting point.
For a shelf rather than the floor, the Unit 01 or Unit 13 100% & 400% sets at $104 give you the two most recognisable units in the size most collectors settle on. Before ordering a 1000%, check the size guide — at 70cm it needs floor or plinth space, not a shelf.
